March is an important month in the auto industry, with the release of new number plates and one of its largest events, the Geneva car show, going on. On a local level there are plenty more car related things happening as well. Whether you’re looking for something to do as a family over the Easter holidays, on the odd weekend or fancy a trip to Europe, there are all sorts of modern and classic car events, shows and races going on throughout March.
Geneva Motor Show
When: 8th to 18th March
Where: Palexpo, Geneva, Switzerland
The 88th Geneva International Motor Show runs for ten days from early to mid-March. As one of the biggest and best car shows in the world, expect a massive array of premieres (including the new Peugeot Rifter and 508 Fastback), concept vehicles and more across seven huge halls. Along with the latest models on show, the Geneva car show will feature various exhibitions and look to the future of the industry with a project surrounding energy efficient cars in action.
Goodwood Members Meeting
When: 17th to 18th March
Where: Goodwood House, Chichester, UK
Kicking off with the motorsport season opener is the 76th annual Goodwood Members’ Meeting. This historic event is in such high demand that only Goodwood Road and Racing (GRRC) members can purchase tickets, with sadly no public allocation. A variety of races take place over the weekend, most of the practices on the Saturday and the serious trophy competition on Sunday. High speed demonstrations for Formula 5000 and NASCAR vehicles and more, along with evening entertainment, will make for a fun-packed weekend.
Practical Classics Classic Car and Restoration Show
When: 23rd to 25th March
Where: NEC, Birmingham, UK
Over 25,000 visitors are expected at the Practical Classics Classic Car and Restoration Show. Yet another Birmingham car show, the event will feature a wide array of classic restored vehicles and finds at the NEC arena. More than 150 classic vehicle clubs will be displaying their historic models, with the UK’s largest barn find showcasing vehicles that have been unearthed after decades of neglect. There’ll be a trade village, autojumble and live stage at the latest Birmingham car show.
North Yorkshire Classic Rally
When: 25th March
Where: The Hawkhills, Easingwold, UK
For some racing action this March, head on down (or up) to the North Yorkshire Classic Rally. Organised by York Motor Club, this will be the ninth edition with the start and finish based at The Hawkhills. The event is open to pre-1985 cars and covers around 147 miles round the historic city of York, comprised of 100 regularity miles and 12 special tests. There are a range of different classes if you fancy entering, though watching can be just as much fun (especially for the special tests).
British Motoring Treasures
When: Throughout March
Where: British Motor Museum, Warwick, UK
Technically this exhibition has been going on since May 2017, but it’s due to come to an end soon so what better time to visit than during the Easter holidays? The British Motoring Treasures was funded by Arts Council England and uses fifty objects to tell the story of Britain’s motor industry. Inventions, cars, artwork and tools, there’s plenty to interest children of most ages in the auto industry without it being too overwhelming.
From a trip overseas to the Geneva car show or into the country for the Goodwood Members’ Meeting, there are plenty of modern and classic car events going on this March to keep you busy.
