The easiest way to sell your car is to head to a professional dealer, especially if you’re looking to part-exchange it to buy a new one.

If you sell your car privately, you’ll need to put in the legwork to advertise it on car selling sites, take photos, negotiate and also see off timewasters and unrealistic purchasers trying to get you to drop on your asking price. Selling a car privately can be a minefield, which is why we would recommend visiting a dealership.

What you need to know about selling financed vehicles

You may be wondering if you can sell a car that’s on finance. In short, yes you can. But remember, it is illegal to knowingly sell someone a car with outstanding finance without informing them of the situation.

There are a couple of things you must do first. You’ll need to inform your finance company and ask them for a settlement figure. This is the outstanding balance left to pay off your loan. You then need to pay off that settlement fee as you cannot sell a car with outstanding finance on it.

If you are taking your car into a dealership to part-exchange it, the sale of your vehicle may be enough to pay off the loan, however, you may need a further deposit to put against your new car.
